Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse is On Hold
The federal divestiture of Old Saybrook’s Outer Light has been on hold since the meeting between Old Saybrook First Selectman Michael Pace, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the General Services Administration (GSA) on January 30, 2008.
According to Congressman Joe Courtney, the “GSA has not yet issued a notice of availability to date due to concerns of limited accessibility of the site.” In 2007, Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse was placed on National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act 2007 Program of Lighthouses determined to be excess property and available for transfer to the local community or Lighthouse Preservation groups.
Since 2007, the town of Old Saybrook has expressed numerous concerns about the Lighthouse ownership as reported in the following posts,
Old Saybrook Lighthouse Politics of Preservation, January 25th, 2008
Old Saybrook Lighthouse Quagmire?, September 20th, 2007
Old Saybrook Lighthouse Privacy, August 24th, 2007
Saybrook Breakwater Light Privacy Problems, July 18th, 2007
In summary, First Selectman Michael Pace is concerned with emergency management, navigational safety, and public access through private property in the Borough of Fenwick and public safety on half-mile jetty to the Outer Light (aka Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse). Furthermore, if the proposed Broadwater Liquefied Natural Gas facility is constructed than Mr. Pace believes boats would need to navigate closer to the lighthouse due to the new security perimeter.

Hi Speedy,
Hopefully, First Selectman Michael Pace is working for a peaceful solution on the ownership transfer of the Outer Lighthouse? A few DNP peace globes in the harbor might help light the right way.
Nice to see your ship escaped the Tornado created by the Moonraker Sewer Service and passed my ship safely in DNP waters!

Greetings! On 6/27/08 the GSA did send a memorandum excessing the outer light at the Saybrook Breakwater. I am the CEO and co-founder of a 501(c)(3) historic preservation organization called OakView Preservation Incorporated (OVPI) that has filed a letter of interest in acquiring the Outer Light so we can preserve it in perpetuity. We admit there are a tremendous amount of “sticky wickets”: still, we believe they can be overcome.
Such a wonderful treasure needs to have a guardian that will be caretaker, preserver and ensure that exploitation is for the public good. Historic Preservation is the core of our values and at the core of what we intend to accomplish with the Saybrook Outer Light.
As we progress, I will gladly keep you all infomed. You may start visiting our web site at http://www.ovpi.org where we will start a blog for the light once we have the application in hand from the GSA (we have already begun the process of completing the application in hopes that we can be the organization awarded custody as caretaker and guardian of the light!).
Wish us luck!
Kind regards,
~Brad~

Hi Brad,
In light of the town’s issues with excessing the outer light, I hope this is great news for a historic preservation organization to preserve and maintain this historic Lighthouse Treasure!
We wish you our best for success,
Debbie
