Heceta Head Lighthouse Romantic Retreat
Heceta Head Lighthouse, the jewel of Oregon’s coast, is a working Lighthouse on a coastal cliff and a renowned Bed and Breakfast Keeper’s house providing a romantic retreat with majestic views of the Pacific Ocean lapping the scenic Oregon seacoast. Currently, the historic Lighthouse is one of a few operating Lighthouses with its original Fresnel lens consisting of 392 gleaming prisms in service casting a flashing beam of light every 10-seconds 205-feet above sea level to a visible range of 28 nautical miles out to sea.
The 225-feet high rocky headland and shallow sea below was the ideal location to mark the dark coastline of Oregon between Cape Arago and Yaquina Head. In 1892, a flat level plateau was created by blasting the rocky cliff at a height of 150-feet above sea level to support the 56-feet high brick Lighthouse and work room. The 2-ton Fresnel lens brasswork and 392 delicate hand-ground prisms were off-loaded onto the cove by surf boat. Two Queen Ann Keeper’s House were built about quarter-mile further inland for the Head Light-Keeper and his assistants.
Heceta Head Lighthouse was First Lit on March 30, 1894 exhibiting a 80,000 candlepower Flashing White Light every 60-seconds illuminated by a First-order Fresnel lens and kersene lamp 205-feet above sea level and a visible range of 21-miles out to sea to guide mariners between Coos Bay and Newport.
The Head Keeper’s house was sold for $10 in 1940 and torn down for lumber. In 1963, the Lighthouse was automated ending the era of Light-keepers and the Assistant Keeper’s House was transferred to the U.S. Forest Service.
Daily Tours of the Lighthouse are available from March to October between 11 am and 5 pm. During park hours, the grounds of the lighthouse observation area are open year round.
The Bed and Breakfast Keeper’s house is open year round with accommodations for 14 guests who experience Victorian living and the fine dining of a seven course gourmet breakfast. Oregon’s most photographed Lighthouse and allegedly haunted Lighthouse Keeper’s house is a popular romantic getaway and a favorite location for Weddings.
According to Lighthouse Legend, the Lighthouse is haunted by Rue, the Lady in Gray, who is forever searching for her long-lost daughter. Rue, the wife of an assistant light keeper in the 1890s, committed suicide after her young daughter drowned in the ocean. Some guests claim they have had friendly encounters with the Lady in Gray! During your romantic getaway, Rue might surprise you!

Romantic? Breakfast? Scenic Vistas? Whew! I would take this vacation destination any day. Far better than the Hollydale Motor Lodge on county rd #9. They have coffee “in house” …. but that’s it.
I heard that Sam & Diane stayed in room 5 and have autographed pictures in there.
Cheers, DD

A great place to start or rekindle some romantic flames!
Did Rue autograph Sam & Diane’s pictures, too?
Hollydale Motor Lodge doesn’t serve Donuts???
Cheers, my friend

I’m thinking of writing a travel/wedding destination magazine article about Heceta Head based on my own wedding experience at the lighthouse. Are you familiar with any recently published articles of the same subject?

Hi Hecetabride,
I’m not familiar with any wedding experiences at Heceta Head Lighthouse published online recently or in the past few years.
No doubt, your fresh unique perspective may help future engaged couples with their wedding plans.
