Lighthouse Background:

Corsewall Lighthouse was built from 1815 to 1817 at Corsewall Point on the rocky Rhins of Galloway to warn ships of the rocky point as mariners approached the mouth of the Loch Ryan.

Robert Stevenson (1772 - 1850), a reknown Lighthouse engineer, designed the 86-feet (26m) high white masonry tower to exhibit a Flashing White Light illuminated by 12 oil lamps and reflectors 112-feet above sea level visible to a range of 22 nautical miles. The current Light characteristic is five white flashes every 30 seconds.

The lighthouse was automated in 1994 and remotely monitored from Edinburgh. The former Keeper’s Quarters was sold by the Northern Lighthouse Board and James Neilson converted the Keeper’s house into a hotel in 1995.

In 2000, Gordon and Kay Ward, the current hotel proprietors, purchased Corsewall Lighthouse Hotel for £695,000 ($1.35 million). The current Scottish Lord Lightly and Lady Lighthouse hope to net a profit of a cool million clams for their Lighthouse kingdom!
