Lighthouses of the Rich and Famous
Two Lighthouses located on Martha’s Vineyard are receiving vital restorations. Martha’s Vineyard was made famous in the 1800s by the rich whaling captains who sailed from Edgartown Harbor guided by the Edgartown Lighthouse. In recent memory, the island became famous after the Movie Jaws, the two Kennedy accidents, Belushi’s overdose, and the island home of former first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
Until recently, Martha’s Vineyard Museum lacked the funds to restore Edgartown Lighthouse and East Chop Lighthouse located in Oak Bluffs. The recent Community Preservation Act and private donations has covered the $390,000 price tag.
The restoration of Edgartown Lighthouse was more costly due to the removal of bricks when the cast-iron tower was floated to the island from Ipswich after the Hurricane of 1938 destroyed the original Edgartown Lighthouse.
Martha’s Vineyard Museum plans to celebrate by opening both Lighthouses to the public after the restoration of both Lighthouses has been completed. The museum also plans to find a way to restore Gay Head Lighthouse at the estimated cost of $500,000.
After the Museum’s three Lighthouses are restored, the rich and famous will be guided to their summer playground by the shining Beacons. As Robin Leach of the “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” would say, “champagne wishes and caviar dreams from now on” to toast Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Castles!
