8th Soundkeeper’s Lighthouse to Lighthouse Race
The 8th Soundkeeper’s Lighthouse to Lighthouse Race is scheduled for this Saturday, September 8. Competitors with human powered seaworthy vessels will race around Pecks Ledge Lighthouse and paddle south passing by Sheffield Island Lighthouse to Greens Ledge Lighthouse where the racers will return following the same course to the finish line at Compo Beach in Westport, Connecticut.
Paddle Racers are asked to donate $45 to compete in the 12.6 nautical miles (14.5-miles) long strenuous race which helps the Soundkeeper organization protect and preserve Long Island Sound. For more information about the race, please visit the Lighthouse to Lighthouse Race web page.
After this exhausting event, visitors can enjoy some scrumptious seafood at the nearby 30th Oyster Festival this weekend, Sep. 7 to 9, 2007.
Pecks Ledge Lighthouse (1906) and Greens Ledge Lighthouse (1902) were constructed after Norwalk Harbor was dredged for the safe passage of larger ships with deeper drafts. Both Lighthouses also marked underwater hazards at each end of the Norwalk Islands archipelago, a dangerous group of 16 islands and smaller ledges that were originally marked by Sheffield Island Lighthouse.
Pecks Ledge Lighthouse and Greens Ledge Lighthouse are cast-iron “sparkplug” style Lighthouses and Active aids to navigation. Pecks Ledge Light exhibits a Flashing Green Light every 2.5-seconds 61-feet above sea level visible to a range of 5 nautical miles. Greens Ledge Light exhibits a Alternating White and Red Light every 24-seconds 62-feet above sea level visible to a range of 18 nautical miles.
