New England Lighthouse Treasures

Governor Charlie Crist proclaimed September 15, 2007 as Florida Lighthouse Day to celebrate, promote, and support the 30 Lighthouses still standing in the State, 21 of which continue to shine their beacons bright at night! The Florida Lighthouse Association sponsored the event to celebrate the 59 historic Lighthouses constructed to protect coastal shipping and guide mariners into Florida’s ports and rivers safely over the past 183-years.

Only six Lighthouses are open to the public year-yound: St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum, Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse near Daytona, Jupiter Lighthouse north of Palm Beach, Cape Florida Lighthouse on Key Biscayne near Miami, Key West Lighthouse, and Boca Grande Lighthouse on Gasparilla Island south of Sarasota.

During Lighthouse Day, St. Marks Lighthouse in St. Marks Refuge south of Tallahassee, and Crooked River Lighthouse on the Gulf Coast just east of Aplachicola were also open for the celebration. A brick laying ceremony was scheduled to celebrate the rebuilding of the Cape St. George Lighthouse which collapsed in 2005.
