Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse Vandalism

blogrockland Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse was vandalized on Monday night, Aug 20. Defacing the Lighthouse has maliciously ambushed the volunteer work efforts in restoring the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse over the past nine years. Without Light-keepers tending the Light, abandoned Lighthouses are destroyed by neglect and vandalism. Maybe, the the Friends of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse can solve the problem by implementing a Lighthouse Caretaker or Light-keeper program similar to the Caretaker job at Wind Point Lighthouse located in Racine, Wisconsin.

Sue Clark of Lighthouse News has posted more news about the crime complete with crime scene photos. Story Link: Vandals Spraypaint Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse.

Rockland Breakwater Light, located at the end of the 4,346-feet long Breakwater, was First Lit on October 30, 1902 exhibiting a Flashing White Light every 5-seconds illuminated by a Fourth-order Fresnel lens 39-feet above sea level to a visible range of 17 nautical miles. The Breakwater was built to protect Rockland Harbor from the violent winter Nor’easters. From 1891 to 1899, temporary Beacons were erected and moved as construction extended the Breakwater.

In 1998, ownership of the Lighthouse was transferred to the City of Rockland under the Maine Lights Program. A year later, the Friends of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, was established for the restoration and preservation of this Harbor treasure. Currently, the Lighthouse is an Active Aid to Navigation with Coast Guard access to the beacon and foghorn.
