New England Lighthouse Treasures

On August 4, 2007, the 10th annual Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race started near the Crescent Beach State Park entrance on Route 77 and finished at the historic Portland Head Lighthouse at Fort Williams Park, perhaps the most photographed Lighthouse in the United States. 4,839 runners from all parts of the U.S. and elite athletes from around the world ran the 6.2-mile scenic ocean view course to the Lighthouse.

A estimated 10,000 spectators lined the course to cheer the runners in Maine’s largest road race which has become a popular event on the U.S. Road Race circuit. Duncan Kibet from Kenya won the race in the record time of 27 minutes and 52 seconds. Luminita Talpos from Romania was the first woman to finish with the time of 32:20. A $10,000 prize was awarded to Duncan Kibet and Luminita Talpos.

TD Banknorth is the sponsor of the race founded by Joan Benoit Samuelson, the 1984 Olympic Marathon Gold Medalist from Cape Elizabeth who also serves as a spokesperson for the bank during the year promoting the race and the bank’s charitable programs which benefit Maine’s youth with scholarships and sponsorship programs.
