New England Lighthouse Treasures

Cleveland East Ledge Light, named after former President Grover Cleveland who frequently fished the area, has been determined to be excess by the U.S. Coast Guard and was made available on July 5, 2007 to eligible organizations able to comply with the guidelines of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. A letter of interest must be submitted by September 5, 2007.

No Local groups have shown interest in acquiring the Lighthouse eight miles southwest of the Cape Cod Canal entrance and 2.2-miles offshore from Wild Harbor due to the estimated cost of $100,000 to restore the Tower and $15,000 needed for maintenance annually. The modern concrete Lighthouse will most likely be sold to the highest bidder at public auction if eligible organizations do not respond by September 5, 2007.

Cleveland East Ledge Lighthouse was First Lit in 1943 exhibiting a Flashing White light every 10 seconds illuminated by a Fourth-order Fresnel lens and kerosene lamp 74-feet above sea level visible to range of 17 nautical miles in clear weather. The modern 70-feet high steel reinforced concrete Tower was built on a 52-feet diameter cylindrical caisson pier that was sunk 21-feet below water.
