New England Lighthouse Treasures

A unique outdoor Movie experience using the conical Lighthouse Tower as a 20 by 12-feet projection screen debut on July 1, 2005 as 500 people watched the premiere movie. The movie and mosquitoes are free to anyone attending the third season of the Lighthouse Film series. Mosquito repellent, beach towels, blankets, or lawn chairs are recommended for this old fashioned Texan adventure!

Proceeds from the Concessions at the outdoor Lighthouse Cinema help defray the cost of maintaining the retired navigational beacon. Port Isabel Lighthouse was First Lit on March 20, 1853 exhibiting a Fixed White Light 82-feet above sea level and visible for 16-miles to guide navigation through Port Isabel and the barrier islands. In 1905, Port Isabel Lighthouse was deactivated and abandoned after a new railroad opened linking Corpus Christi to Brownsville caused a decline in commercial shipping. In the 1920s, the Lighthouse was repaired and opened as a tourist attraction for the developing recreational industry. In 1952, the Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Park was opened to the public.

Today, tourists can climb 75 winding stairs of the newly restored Port Isabel Lighthouse for breathtaking views of the Laguna Madre and see a movie on the 57-feet high brick white Lighthouse Tower at night. Both Port Isabel Lighthouse and the Keeper’s Cottage are open to the public. For visiting hours, please visit the Museums of Port Isabel
